The Baker District Redevelopment as outlined in the Urban Design Master Plan approved by City Council on July 21st, 2021 has two levels of underground parking. Further information on the Baker District can be found at www.guelph.ca/business/downtown-business/bakerdistrict/ To answer your specific question, many studies and tests have been conducted and continue to happen on the Baker Street Parking Lot in preparation for the development including the new central library. This includes geotechnical/soils testing, hydro geological studies and the archaeological clearance currently underway. These studies and tests have provided valuable information for the design team in preparation for the development. For this project in particular, the Baker street, Chapel Lane and Park Lane reconstruction and right of way works, specific testing similar to the testing performed for the Baker Redevelopment is underway and will continue prior to final designs being completed.

If I recall correctly, plans for redeveloping the Baker Street parking lot will include going down three storeys for underground parking. There are unknown questions about how far down the project can go before it hits the water table and has to stop. And I am sure there are other unkowns about possible complications with the parking lot project. Will the reconstruction of Baker Street be used as an opportunity to test for these unknowns, and avoid going ahead with current plans for the parking lot if they are in fact not feasible?
