Baker Street reconstruction

In the summer of 2022, we started work for the Baker Street reconstruction to replace aging underground pipes and sewers on Baker Street, Chapel and Park Lanes to ensure our Downtown is future-ready.

Baker Street changed from being a one-way road between Chapel Lane and Woolwich Street to a full, two-way road. The intersection of Baker Street and Woolwich Street will be redesigned and include new traffic signals. Construction is expected to finish in fall 2024.

Once the underground work is complete, we’ll reconstruct the roads and add new streetlights, accessible sidewalks, benches, bicycle racks, and street trees to the area.

During engagement for this project, we hosted open houses to present plans and the construction design concept for Baker Street, Park and Chapel Lanes.

The project was phased to accommodate archaeological clearances, temporary and permanent utility relocations, and the Baker District redevelopment

User 5635871 year ago If I recall correctly, plans for redeveloping the Baker Street parking lot will include going down three storeys for underground parking. There are unknown questions about how far down the project can go before it hits the water table and has to stop. And I am sure there are other unkowns about possible complications with the parking lot project. Will the reconstruction of Baker Street be used as an opportunity to test for these unknowns, and avoid going ahead with current plans for the parking lot if they are in fact not feasible?

User 5678681 year ago Several buildings have entrances and access points located along Chapel Lane. At Knox Church the Chapel Lane entrance is required to maintain the accessibility of the building (the elevator is located at the Chapel Lane entrance). Will vehicle access (at least 1 lane) be provided along Chapel Lane at all times during the work? Without the Chapel Lane entry many of our parishioners will not be able to access the building.

User 5880621 year ago Why is the Baker Street lot being closed before the critical Christmas marketing season? I understand this has come up in meetings and the response was the timing was "part of the city's comittment to the contractor". If, as you say, the work cannot continue over winter, why is the lot closed now? It seems incongruous the city is celebrating "Bridge to Better Business" while shutting down the largest area for parking in the downtown before Christmas.

User 6340321 year ago Given the stress on parking for businesses in the area, will there be enforcemnet of two-hour on street parking? Also, has any consideration been given to steps to provide temporary relief, such as angled parking on Chapel Lane and Wyndham St.? Finally, would it be possible for the time being to allow access to the lot on days where there is no construction/archaeology activity such as this past week?

User 5683451 year ago Hello, I'm curious as to how council can reconcile the elimination of accessibility to small businesses still in the throes of a global pandemic without any plan to assist them throughout this development? This is keeping in mind that these are the same businesses who we're excluded from the dining district and who have sacrificed so much over the last year and a half in order to keep our community safe.

User 6901121 year ago We fully support the construction initiative that includes bringing the Library up to date, and the community and downtown advantages that will come from the Baker Street project. However, these benefits will come much later in time than some businesses can survive with customer access disruptions. In order to survive, small businesses in the Upper Wyndham area need parking relief of some sort. What temporary solutions have been explored to provide access to parking for our customers while the project is ongoing? Have you considered a shuttle service from the Market Square Parkade, or other parking areas (ie the lot adjacent to the police station) as a temporary solution? Will angled parking, which is part of a longer term plan, be able to be implemented sooner to provide more customer access on Upper Wyndham during the time we are affected by the construction?
