Downtown Heritage Conservation District

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback throughout the project.

About the project

In 2021, Council approved the recommendations of the Cultural Heritage Action Plan which included: For Old Downtown, undertake a comprehensive strategy, including community consultation, to direct future cultural heritage conservation efforts and planned change.

The provincial government’s More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022, significantly changed the structure of municipal heritage registers. As a result, all properties currently listed on the Municipal Register of Cultural Heritage Properties must be removed by January 1, 2025 (revised deadline January 1, 2027). About 1,700 properties will lose protections. 120 of these properties located in downtown Guelph.

Downtown Heritage Conservation District Plan survey

January 27, 2025 - February 8, 2025

We need your feedback on the plan

The City of Guelph is completing a Heritage Conservation District Plan to develop policies and guidelines for a district in the commercial core of downtown Guelph. A Heritage Conservation District (H.C.D.) would protect significant buildings and landscape features and create a heritage-sensitive plan to guide future development in the area.

We completed the study phases with your help and now we need your feedback on the Plan Phase of the HCD. In this survey we would like to get your feedback on the each part that goes into the plan such as the Statement of Direct Significance, the Plan objectives, policies and guidelines and why and how we would require Heritage Permits. Learn more about the process by viewing the presentation and the open house #3 information boards and then take this survey. There is some information to read as you go through the survey. It should take from 15 - 20 minutes to complete.

Read our final study report and click through past phases of this project to learn more about how we got here.
