Naming Places

Have you ever wondered where your street got its name?

We’re re-imagining how places across Guelph like streets, parks, City buildings and more are named.

We’d like to know:

  • What kinds of names are important to Guelphites?
  • What should place names achieve?
  • What steps should taken when considering a name for a new place or renaming an existing place?
  • What should we watch out for?
  • How can we involve the community in that naming process?

Every place can have a story. Help us tell the story of the places and people across Guelph that matter to you through naming.

How can I participate right now?

We’re talking to people out in the community and on Have Your say throughout May and June 2026.

  • Visit our team in parks and at festivals and events this spring
  • Participate online any time between May 26 and June 28

Take our 10 minute survey to share what place names mean to you and how we should decide on place names.

Drop pins on our map to let us know what places need new names.

Our comment board is open! Here, you can tell us what types of places need what types of names.

What’s in a name?

May 26, 2026 4:00 AM - June 28, 2026 3:59 AM

Help us tell Guelph’s story through the way we name streets, City buildings, parks and other public places. We’re looking for your feedback through three different online activities this spring so we can learn

  • who deserve recognition through naming, and what types of stories should place names tell;
  • how different place names make you feel, and what changes we can make to help people from different cultures and ancestry know they are part of the fabric of Guelph, and
  • what we should consider when designing a new process to name places in Guelph.
