One Canopy - Tree planting strategy

This consultation is now closed.

This consultation is now closed. The City web page for One Canopy is updated with the final report and information you need to know.

How can we double the number of trees in Guelph?

The One Canopy strategy aims to increase tree planting efforts across the community using a mix of public and private land to achieve 40 percent canopy cover in Guelph.

Guelph’s Official Plan requires doubling our current tree canopy in 10 years. City’s recent Urban Forest Study shows that area available on City-owned land suitable for planting trees is not enough to meet Guelph’s canopy cover goals. It also showed that the City’s current planting efforts are not enough to achieve our targets.

To meet our community goal, we’re going to need to incentive everyone – homeowners, developers, landowners and businesses – to plant trees across the city. To develop this strategy, please consider and share your stories and testimonials on current planting efforts privately or with the City, barriers you see to equitable canopy cover and what role you see yourself, businesses, developers and neighbours playing in planting efforts on public and private land.

We want to hear from you!

  • Use our survey to tell us about trees on your property. Whether or not you own a property, tell us about your interests around trees and what it would take to get you and people like you planting. You will find two surveys below, one for residents and one for businesses, institutions and organizations with private property.
  • Share an idea and get the conversation rolling about what the City can do to inspire and promote tree planting around Guelph
  • Put a pin on a map to tell us abut tree planting activities, organized planting events, or spaces that would be amazing host a planting event.
  • Attend a virtual workshop:
  • Feb 16, 6:30 – 8 p.m. – Public Workshop.  Attend using this link and password: PlantTrees (this event will be broadcast live on guelph.ca/live and on our Facebook page
  • February 17, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.– Business, institutions and other private land owner workshop. Attend using this link and password: PlantTrees.

Please note: This project began in an older version of our website. Some of the tools and information may appear different than originally designed.
