University Avenue West Reconstruction

The City of Guelph will be proceeding with the reconstruction of University Avenue West (from College Avenue to Gordon Street). Reconstruction will include the replacement of underground utilities and surface works including sanitary sewers, storm sewers, watermains, services to property line, asphalt, curbs, sidewalks and other miscellaneous works.

The project is needed to replace underground infrastructure at the end of its service life, enhance accessible travel by replacing existing sidewalk with wider sidewalk and infilling the new sidewalk, and to address drainage challenges and better align to with the City’s Master plans.

Attend the drop-in open house on February 11, 2026 from 6:30 - 8:30 at John McCrae Public School.

Jim Stokes2 months ago We noticed that College Avenue West reconstruction projects were completed slowly and dragged-on unreasonably such that the road wasn’t reopened until December 23 in each of the two years. This surely caused grief to the thousands who would have otherwise benefited from an earlier re-opening. I can confirm that residents on University Ave West suffered from high volumes of redirected traffic speeding through our neighbourhood.Can you advise: has this project been Tendered yet? If not, when? what is the expected Project Start Date? what is the expected Project Duration in days? what is the expected Project Completion Date? will there be requirements on the contractor to (subject only to truly extreme weather conditions): 'complete expeditiously’? ‘not stop or delay work without City consent’? ‘employ additional equipment and workers to meet the Completion Date’? As you can appreciate, this project will be disruptive to local residents and having it completed as soon as is reasonably possible is important.Also: Please consider making Caledonia/University West a four-way stop. Many students don’t even look up when they cross the intersection. Many vehicles on Caledonia fail to stop. Local residents know to slow down and almost stop before crossing this intersection because it is dangerous.Also: Please consider adding a pinch-point between the bend and College Ave, where the curbs could come out into the roadway in order to further slow traffic.Also: At Gordon Street, cars parked close to the intersection make it difficult at times to turn onto University without being in the wrong lane. Winter conditions make it even worse. Consider removing some parking spaces near the intersection.Also: The sight lines at University/College are poor looking Easterly. Mounds of snow, garbage bins, and elevations make it difficult to see Westbound vehicles from the stop sign on University.Thanks, Jim.

2 months ago Hi,I appreciate that sidewalk is being added there there is currently none. Also i'm happy that the road is being narrowed. I hope this will help the speeding issue on this street. (made worse during the College Ave work)First question, is it correct that an all way stop is being added at the Caledonia/University intersection? I hope that it is because i have seen a few near misses drivers on Caledonia assuming that the driver on University is stopping but there is no stop.Second question, would it be possible to investigate if curb extension could be added at intersections along this street to further your traffic calming efforts?Third, is there plans to add sidewalk to other streets in the neighbourhood that dont have them yet?
