A collage of five different scenes. From left to right: a pink building with a sign that reads 'The Boathouse' surrounded by greenery; a stone sign with the text 'University of Guelph' in front of yellow flowers; an aerial view of a city at sunset or dusk, showing buildings and streets; a market scene with a person selling produce under a tent with colorful flags; and a pathway through an autumn forest with trees displaying fall colors.

Finding Your Way: A City-Wide Wayfinding Strategy

About the Project

We have developed a city-wide wayfinding strategy to make it easier for residents and visitors to get around Guelph. The initiative aims to create a future-focused, user-friendly wayfinding system of signs and navigation tools that supports accessibility and connectivity for people of all ages and abilities. This project is part of the City’s commitment to building a well-connected city, as outlined in the Future Guelph Strategic Plan.

The key goals of this strategy include designing a cohesive set of signs and information tools that align with Guelph’s unique identity, improving the user experience for navigating the city, and ensuring equitable access to information that helps people get around. The strategy will guide the future design and implementation of wayfinding projects across departments.

To help us complete this work, we have asked for your ideas and input on Guelph’s sense of place and identity and how that could be communicated through signage and wayfinding, tools you already use to get around unfamiliar places, and destinations and amenities across the city that are common points of interest for both residents and visitors.

This initiative aligns with existing master plans such as the Economic Development and Tourism Strategy, Cycling Master Plan, and Transportation Master Plan, all of which highlight the need for cohesive wayfinding to enhance connectivity and accessibility. Additionally, the project supports ongoing efforts with long-term projects like Downtown Revitalization by designing multi-modal navigation tools to help connect people from major gateways to and around our core.

The City partnered with Cygnus Design Group Inc. to guide the strategy development and ensure the wayfinding system reflects best practices and community needs.

Please note: This project began in an older version of our website. Some of the tools and information may appear different than originally designed.
