Wyndham Street North set up with road-side patios in 2021

Downtown Renewal - Wyndham St. and St. George's Square

A sub-project of the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program

The Phase 1: Wyndham Street North Reconstruction project is the first detailed design and construction project in the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program. This project was informed by the Wyndham Street Environmental Assessment (EA) and is the first phase identified in the upcoming Capital Implementation Plan (which outlines the construction sequencing).

This project runs in tandem with construction planning and implementation for the fulsome Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program, and the study and design process for the Macdonell Bridge and Allan's Dam structure project.

Construction along Wellington Street East occurred in the summer of 2025 to lay the groundwork for new infrastructure along Wyndham N. and gas and power utility upgrades have been happening in sections of Downtown to prepare for the larger Construction which began March 30, 2025 and is moving through Wyndham street over the course of the next four months. Construction areas will re-open in stages as roads are complete to a level to allow traffic. All Wyndham Street construction is expected to complete in 2028.

Area of study

This part of the project focuses on the reconstruction of Wyndham Street North corridor, from approximately Farquhar Street to Woolwich Street.

What we did

Over the summer of 2023, we took what we had learned from the Form and Function process in the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal project and branched off to begin the design phase for Wyndham Street North and St. George's Square.

You can read our summary of engagement and what we heard in the summer of 2023 here.

To include your voice in our findings we:

  • Came out with our team to St. George's square on multiple days to demonstrate what each Wyndham Street corridor option may feel and look like with different life-sized set-ups
  • Ran an online survey to share more information and gather more thoughts from the community
  • Followed up with an ideas board online to hear your thoughts on how we can improve these options (see phase 2 on our timeline)

As a starting point we focused on conversations with the community to understand your comfort level as pedestrians, cyclists or travelers in a vehicle under each of three design conditions presented and discussed four different options for the intersection of Wyndham, Quebec and Douglas streets. The preferred options would go on to become the foundation for a more fulsome design process.

1) No Bike Path: Similar to the existing conditions on Wyndham Street N. In this design, cyclists would share the roadway with cars and trucks, and parallel parking would be located next to patio space in some areas of Downtown.

a street cross section with a patio next to parallel parking next to a single lane of traffic that shares space between mororists and cyclists

2) Uni-Directional Bike Path: This design would encompass a dedicated bike path on either side of the street that is protected by a movable barrier

A street cross section showing a dedicated bike path running in one direction that would sit between pedestrian or patio space and parking or travel lanes. The bile path would be separated from vehicles by a movable element to protect the cyclists

3) Bi-Directional Bike Path: Cyclists would travel in both directions from one side of the roadway. In this scenario, most parallel parking would exist on a single side of Wyndham, and there is more space between patios and vehicular traffic.
