Wyndham Street North set up with road-side patios in 2021

Downtown Renewal - Wyndham St. and St. George's Square

A sub-project of the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program

The Phase 1: Wyndham Street North Reconstruction project is the first detailed design and construction project in the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program. This project was informed by the Wyndham Street Environmental Assessment (EA) and is the first phase identified in the upcoming Capital Implementation Plan (which outlines the construction sequencing).

This project runs in tandem with construction planning and implementation for the fulsome Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program, and the study and design process for the Macdonell Bridge and Allan's Dam structure project.

Construction along Wellington Street East occurred in the summer of 2025 to lay the groundwork for new infrastructure along Wyndham N. and gas and power utility upgrades have been happening in sections of Downtown to prepare for the larger Construction which began March 30, 2025 and is moving through Wyndham street over the course of the next four months. Construction areas will re-open in stages as roads are complete to a level to allow traffic. All Wyndham Street construction is expected to complete in 2028.

Wyndham St. corridor and intersection

September 27, 2023 - October 15, 2023

What we did

In September 2023, we hosted the second public open house for the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program. The open house shared the project purpose, goals, and recommended solution for the Wyndham Street Corridor based on the design conditions brought to the community earlier in the year.

In the open house and online platform, we presented a concept for the recommended form and function of Wyndham Street plus three short-listed layout options for the intersection of Wyndham, Quebec and Douglas streets based on that new Wyndham Street model for public input.

Please read the summary of engagement and what we heard in the fall of 2023

Recommended option for Wyndham Street: Two Lanes with Uni-Directional Bike Path

Wyndham street designed with a pedestrian clearway, planting and patio zones and a uni-directional bike path, seperated from the roadway with one lane of parking and one lane of travel in each direction.

The presented Wyndham Street reduces the road from a four-lane configuration to two lanes, providing traffic calming while accommodating transit and personal vehicle use. This concept also:

  • Introduces dedicated bike paths
  • provides for loading zones and on-street parking
  • introduces formal planting/furnishing zones with flexible pedestrian zones
  • accommodates additional space for seasonal uses

Intersection design options

Three intersection options were presented for feedback to help inform future phases of design of St. George's Square

Current road configuration with the addition of cycle paths in each direction Realigning Douglas and Quebec streets to meet in a more standard intersection configuration A traffic circle with event space in the middle as envisioned in the 2014 Downtown Secondary plan.
