Wyndham Street North set up with road-side patios in 2021

Downtown Renewal - Wyndham St. and St. George's Square

A sub-project of the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program

The Phase 1: Wyndham Street North Reconstruction project is the first detailed design and construction project in the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program. This project was informed by the Wyndham Street Environmental Assessment (EA) and is the first phase identified in the upcoming Capital Implementation Plan (which outlines the construction sequencing).

This project runs in tandem with construction planning and implementation for the fulsome Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program, and the study and design process for the Macdonell Bridge and Allan's Dam structure project.

Construction along Wellington Street East occurred in the summer of 2025 to lay the groundwork for new infrastructure along Wyndham N. and gas and power utility upgrades have been happening in sections of Downtown to prepare for the larger Construction which began March 30, 2025 and is moving through Wyndham street over the course of the next four months. Construction areas will re-open in stages as roads are complete to a level to allow traffic. All Wyndham Street construction is expected to complete in 2028.

St George's Square concept design comparison

February 3, 2025 - February 25, 2025

What we did

In February 2025, we shared two design concepts for community discussion. These concepts were built based on ideas we heard over the summer of 2024 and will act as a starting point for a more fulsome design of the Square that we will once again bring back to the community for feedback.

Please read the summary of engagement for the preliminary design options for more information about how we brought the community into the conversation and what we heard.

Design Concept A

This Concept envisions a public open space designed as a passive park, emphasizing tranquility, accessibility, and natural beauty. The design encourages people to stop and enjoy their surroundings and relax. The design prioritizes everyday use, offering a welcoming environment for individuals and families to engage in relaxing activities. Additionally, it offers flexibility for events throughout the year.

Design Option A with an event space in the Soutwest plaza, the fountain relocated infront of Old Quebec shops and a park space located near the post office.

Design Concept B

This Concept envisions the Square as a public open space designed as an active park with a stronger emphasis on hard surfaces and lasting materials, creating the perfect environment for a wide range of events and programming. The layout features expansive paved areas, flexible seating, and open spaces that can be easily transformed to accommodate festivals, performances, markets, and community gatherings.

Design concept B showing an event space near the post office with a trellace over an open gathering area, tierd seating and the fountain infront of Old Quebec Shops, a washroom located in the South East corner and a park space in the South West plaza
