Wyndham Street North set up with road-side patios in 2021

Downtown Renewal - Wyndham St. and St. George's Square

A sub-project of the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program

The Phase 1: Wyndham Street North Reconstruction project is the first detailed design and construction project in the Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program. This project was informed by the Wyndham Street Environmental Assessment (EA) and is the first phase identified in the upcoming Capital Implementation Plan (which outlines the construction sequencing).

This project runs in tandem with construction planning and implementation for the fulsome Downtown Infrastructure Renewal Program, and the study and design process for the Macdonell Bridge and Allan's Dam structure project.

Construction along Wellington Street East occurred in the summer of 2025 to lay the groundwork for new infrastructure along Wyndham N. and gas and power utility upgrades have been happening in sections of Downtown to prepare for the larger Construction which began March 30, 2025 and is moving through Wyndham street over the course of the next four months. Construction areas will re-open in stages as roads are complete to a level to allow traffic. All Wyndham Street construction is expected to complete in 2028.

Area of study

This part of the project focuses on the reconstruction of Wyndham Street North corridor, from approximately Farquhar Street to Woolwich Street.

Please note: This project began in an older version of our website. Some of the tools and information may appear different than originally designed.

Wyndham Street and St Geroge's Square revised designs

April 20, 2025 4:00 AM - May 30, 2025 4:00 AM

Based on the earlier work done to determine the travel lanes and pedestrian areas for Wyndham North, we shared a design that is 60% detailed to show specific elements such as pedestrian crossings, parking and patio spaces. Before we went any further with the design, we wanted to hear from you to make sure downtown's main street and St. George's Square will make us proud for generations to come.

Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts on the designs with our project team. Read about what we heard in our Summer 2025 engagement report. Our team is hard at work revising the designs based on community feedback and adding more detail so you can get a sense for the look and feel as well as the function in our next round of design engagement coming in September 2025.

Between April 29 and May 29, 2025, we invited the community:

  • Online: to review the information and give us your feedback
  •  In person: Drop in at city hall to meet with our project team, review the design information and share your thoughts with us. 6 to 8 p.m. on May 1, 2025 at City Hall

You can also click through past phases of this project to learn more about how we got here. You can also review some of the design images from this round of engagement below or download the full Wyndham and St George's Square design packet for more information.

Wyndham Street design concept

Rendering of Wynhdam street design with one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction, curb-side parkin along one side and a bus stop on the other. Dedicated cycle tracks are separated from the road by bollards, and a garden and patio area lays between the cycle track and pedestrian areas.

Wyndham street will have one lane of traffic each direction, with curb side parking, loading and bus zones, and cycle tracks separated from the road by removable bollards. Patios and pedestrian areas will be framed by gardens and trees with advanced soil structures to allow for mature growth.
